TRIGA® Research Test Reactors
TRIGA® (Training, Research, Isotopes, General Atomics)
—Engineering What Endures – From TRIGA® to Tomorrow
Deployed since the 1950s, General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) continues support the global fleet of TRIGA® test reactors with upgrades, consultations, and customer-driven enhancements. These reactors, located in universities and national laboratories worldwide, use inherently safe fuel that cannot melt down—making them ideal platforms for education, training, and experimental research.
Annular Core Research Reactor
Powering Survivability. Advancing Security
GA-EMS is advancing reactor-based testing capabilities through the Combined Radiation Environments for Survivability Testing (CREST) project, a strategic partnership with Sandia National Laboratories. This effort will recapitalize and expand the throughput of the TRIGA-based Annular Core Research Reactor (ACRR), a workhorse reactor supporting National Nuclear Security Administration missions, enabling more robust and scalable survivability testing for critical systems.
TRIGA® Advantages
TRIGA®’s prompt negative temperature coefficient delivers inherent safety by allowing the reactor to self‑stabilize under rapid temperature changes. Its UZrH fuel and high‑temperature cladding remain stable far beyond the limits of aluminum‑clad designs.
TRIGA® History
TRIGA® reactors have been designed and supported by General Atomics for more than 70 years, establishing a long‑standing record of safe, reliable operation. As the world’s most widely used research reactor, TRIGA® serves universities and national laboratories across diverse missions.
TRIGA® Products and Technologies
TRIGA® products span control systems, fuel, and instrumentation that enable safe, reliable reactor operations. GA provides modern control rod drives, long‑lifetime UZrH fuel, and fully integrated instrumentation and control systems to support research and testing reactors worldwide.
