General Atomics US Space Force Unit of the Year Award Presented to 2nd Space Launch Squadron

SAN DIEGO (June 02, 2026) – General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) presented the U.S. Space Force’s (USSF) 2nd Space Launch Squadron (2 SLS), Vandenberg Space Force Base, as the recipient of the second annual General Atomics U.S. Space Force Unit of the Year Award. This recognition was first announced at the 2026 Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) Warfare Symposium.

Scott Forney, president of GA-EMS, presented the award on May 29, 2026, during a unitwide event honoring the squadron’s decisive contributions to national security through a year of unprecedented launch activity and assured access to space.

“The 2nd Space Launch Squadron exemplifies the innovation, resilience, and mission focus required to maintain U.S. leadership in space,” Forney said. “Their ability to dramatically increase operational tempo while overcoming resource constraints reflects the performance this award was created to honor.”

Commanded by Lt. Col. Andrew Singleton, the 2 SLS increased operational tempo by 300% while operating at roughly half its authorized manning, supporting critical launch missions for the Space Development Agency, Missile Defense Agency, NASA, and the National Reconnaissance Office.

The squadron’s most significant impact came through its expeditionary support to the U.S. Army’s $361 million ballistic test program. During a 45-day deployment in extreme conditions, the squadron’s “Space Cowboys” flight restored a critical launch transport system and enabled 15 successful operations, certifying the program’s first overseas launch site and saving the Department of Defense an estimated $16 million.

Established by General Atomics, the Unit of the Year Award recognizes tactical-level Space Force units that demonstrate superior mission execution, innovation, and core values, highlighting their critical role in securing U.S. interests in space and the strong partnership between industry and the Space Force.
