Electromagnetic Systems Division
GA’s Electromagnetic Systems (EMS) Division focuses on the military and commercial applications of advanced electromagnetic technologies, including power generation and distribution, magnetic levitation, and systems design and engineering. The EMS Division supports government customers, which include the Department of Defense, Department of Energy and the Department of Transportation.

Aircraft Launch and Recovery

EMALS
The GA Team EMALS design is a robust, highly reliable launch system that will meet or exceed all Navy performance goals. This design will provide significant reductions in installed weight, volume, and workload compared to the existing steam catapult.

Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG) System
The AAG system will provide the Navy with important new operational advances for safely and efficiently recovering carrier-based, tailhook-equipped aircraft. The system will be back-fitted onto existing CVN 68 class carriers and forward-fitted onto CVN 21 and future carriers.

Electric Ship Systems

Integrated Fight-Through Power
This program will utilize advanced power conversion technology to convert and distribute shipboard electrical power with improved reliability, survivability, and power quality.

Superconducting DC Homopolar Motor
A team headed by General Atomics is under contract with the Office of Naval Research to design and construct a prototype one-quarter scale 5,000 hp superconducting DC homopolar motor.

Maglev Systems

Urban Maglev
The overall objective of the Urban Maglev program is to develop magnetic levitation technology that is a cost-effective, reliable, and environmentally friendly option for urban mass transportation in the United States.

Military Applications
With team members Boeing North America, Bechtel, and Foster-Miller, GA is leading an effort to develop a magnetically levitated (Maglev) high speed test facility for the Air Force High Speed Test Track at Holloman Air Force Base, NM

Civil Applications
For civil applications, GA will play a critical role as a member of the American Magline Group in transferring the highly successful German TransRapid Maglev train technology to the United States.

Weapons Systems

Pulsed Power System for Naval Electromagnetic Launch Development
A team led by General Atomics has started work on developing and testing a proof-of-concept (PoC) pulsed power system for Naval Electromagnetic (EM) Launch Systems
