Internship Program Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What are some of the technologies I will get exposure to?

    General Atomics and its affiliated companies (The Company) are world renowned leaders in developing high-technology systems. Depending on the division an intern is hired into, students can expect to gain exposure to any number of technologies including but not limited to nuclear fuel cycle, remotely piloted aircraft systems, airborne sensors, and advanced electric, electronic, wireless and laser technologies.

  2. Is there a GPA requirement for internships?

    A 3.0 cumulative GPA is preferred and is one of the many factors used in assessing a potential candidate.

  3. Do I qualify for internship positions if I have already graduated?

    No. To qualify for an internship position, students need to be enrolled in an accredited college or university and pursing a Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree at the time of the internship. If you have earned your degree, we encourage you to apply to professional opportunities on our career opportunities portal.

  4. I have earned my Bachelor's degree and am enrolled in a Master's degree program. Do I qualify for the internship program?

    Yes. We offer several internship positions for students pursuing their Master's or PhD's.

  5. When is the best time to apply for summer internships?

    We typically post our summer internship positions and start taking applications in the winter. Summer internship positions are typically filled by May.

  6. What are the dates of the summer internship program?

    The summer internship program is typically ten weeks long starting in June and ending in August. The internships are full-time during this period. Opportunities may exist to continue working part-time after the summer program concludes.

  7. When is the best time to apply to part-time internship opportunities?

    There is no preferred time to apply to part-time internships. Internships are advertised when there is a business need throughout the year.

  8. What is the hiring process for internships?

    All students must apply to a position to be considered. Once you have applied, our hiring process involves resume review against the qualifications of the job, interviewing, contacting your references (former employers and/or professors), conducting a background check, issuing an offer, and successfully passing a pre-employment drug screen.

  9. What is the time commitment required for an internship?

    The time commitment for our part-time internships will vary based on the group's needs but will typically require a commitment of at least 10 hours per week. Our summer internship positions typically require a commitment of 40 hours per week for ten weeks.

  10. Are your internship positions paid?

    Yes, all of our internships are paid competitively.

  11. Do you hire first year college students for internships?

    If a first year college student applicant meets the qualifications for the position, they will be considered.

  12. Do internships require a secret clearance?

    Very few of our intern positions require a clearance however any of our positions may require a security clearance in the future. If a security clearance is required, it will be mentioned in the job description.

  13. Does the company recruit on college campuses?

    Yes, we actively recruit on college campuses. Locations, dates, and times of events we will be attending can be found on the events tab of our career page.

  14. Can an internship lead into a full-time position?

    Yes, internship positions may lead to full-time positions.
