High Power Inverters for Energy Conversion

4.5-kV Wind Power Inverter

High-power inverters designed and manufactured by GA’s Electromagnetic Systems Group play a key role in converting the energy captured by distributed renewable energy power plants, such as wind turbines, into high-quality power for the electric utility grid.  EMS recently developed a medium-voltage inverter for 2.5-MW wind turbines that converts the varying high-voltage generator output (~3,500 to ~7,000 VDC) into 3,300 VAC, 60 Hz power.  This new inverter model is presently undergoing final testing and will be available for commercial sale in the second half of 2008.

EMS high-power inverters can also be used in other renewable energy applications requiring high-power conversion, including solar, ocean wave and current, and geothermal power plants.  EMS can provide standard or customized inverter modules for power levels from 1 to 10 MW, across a wide voltage range.
