Remote Robotic Manipulator System (RRMS)
The Remote Robotic Manipulator System (RRMS) is designed for applications such as remote cleaning, desealing, sealing, painting and inspection in hazardous and difficult to access locations. The compact, seven degree of freedom manipulator arm can support specialized devices such as a high pressure water spray nozzle, motorized brushes, solvent applicators, vacuum nozzles, vision, lighting and sensors. The waterproof, sealed arm resists most chemicals and can comply with explosion hazard requirements.
The RRMS is designed for remote operations where human access is difficult or unsafe. The manipulator arm provides the advantages of a fully programmable robot as well as a tele-operated manipulator. Required motions are taught using a compact, portable master control which rests on the operator's lap. Multiple path programs can be stored for repeat applications. Miniature sealed cameras and a laser targeting device assist in remote positioning and teaching.
The manipulator arm interfaces to the support controls through an umbilical to permit remote operations. Support equipment and controls are housed in a portable cart which provides all necessary power and utility interfaces. Configurations vary from a unit with minimal features to a drivable, electric powered cart with a completely enclosed, environmentally controlled operator's cab.
Equipment design is based on a system originally developed to remove degraded sealant from aircraft fuel tanks; however, controls, arm configuration and tooling can be tailored to suit a variety of applications including:
